The honest comparison

The ElevenLabs alternative that lives on your laptop.

ElevenLabs makes genuinely excellent AI voices — that's why you're paying for them. But you're paying every month, you're metered by the character, and everything you type (and every voice you clone) travels through their servers. VoxWild is a Windows desktop app built on open-source speech models that does the same core job — narration, voiceover, 6-second voice cloning — entirely on your own machine.

Below is the comparison we'd want if we were the ones switching: the math, the clips, and an honest list of what ElevenLabs still does better.

Three clips from VoxWild's free Fast engine, generated on an ordinary laptop and exported with the built-in loudness normalization. The premium Natural engine sounds better than these.

Straight answers

The three questions everyone asks next.

01
Is the quality really as good as ElevenLabs?

Honestly: their flagship voices still have the edge in dramatic, emotional delivery — that's what a nine-figure research budget buys. For narration, tutorials, podcasts, and audiobooks, most listeners can't reliably tell the difference, and VoxWild's Natural engine closes most of the gap. You don't have to take our word for it: the Fast engine is free and unlimited, so run your own script through it in the next ten minutes and let your ears decide.

02
What's the catch?

Three, and we'd rather you know now: it's Windows-only today. The installer is unsigned (we're a small indie shop — the download comes straight from our public GitHub repo). And the Natural engine is slower than a cloud GPU — a few seconds of processing per sentence on a normal CPU. If those are dealbreakers, ElevenLabs is a fine product; we'd rather you be a happy user of theirs than an annoyed user of ours.

03
Can I use both?

Plenty of people do. Draft unlimited locally in VoxWild — where iterating costs nothing — then spend your metered ElevenLabs characters only on the final pieces that need their premium voices. Your subscription goes a lot further when the rough takes are free.

Try the free tier. Keep your $22.
